Asthma

Q & A

What is asthma?

Asthma is a common condition triggered by specific allergens in the environment. In simple terms, it is a respiratory condition that limits your child’s ability to breathe correctly. The symptoms tend to manifest suddenly in what is known as an asthma attack. These episodes are known to be scary and sometimes even life-threatening.

During asthma attacks, triggers cause inflammation and swelling of the air pathways, which causes permanent damage to lung tissues. Various risk factors are known to increase your child’s susceptibility to asthma. For instance, children with allergies, second-hand exposure to smoke, and family history are known to be at the highest risk. Also, suffering from asthma significantly increases the chances of contracting lung cancer and other respiratory infections.

What are the symptoms of an asthma attack?

In most cases, asthma symptoms tend to manifest before the child turns five years old. These signs vary in terms of frequency and severity and are often unique to the victim. They include:

  • Tightness or heaviness in the chest
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Pale skin color

As mentioned earlier, risk factors such as a history of respiratory infections, eczema, and severe allergies increase the chances of developing asthma during early childhood.

Causes of Asthma Attacks

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America states that the most common cause of an asthma attack is exposure to specific allergens or triggers. The condition, allergic asthma, is caused by:

  • Pet or animal dander
  • Dry or humid air
  • Pollen
  • Mold or dust
  • Perfumes or strong fragrances

It is worth noting that asthma triggers vary, and the first step in treatment is identifying the allergen. In some other cases, asthma attacks occur as a body response to a viral infection, cold, or the flu.

Asthma Treatment

While Asthma doesn’t have a medical cure, with expert medical care from HG pediatrics, you can help your child better manage the condition and reduce the severity and frequency of the attacks. Some children live with the illness to adulthood, while some simply outgrow it.

Treatment options include:

  • Inhaler medications
  • Parent and child education
  • Allergy testing
  • Oral medications
  • In-office and at-home nebulizer treatments

If your child has asthma, you must see your pediatric team as soon as possible when you notice signs of a cold, bronchitis, strep throat, or respiratory infection. These common illnesses can easily trigger an asthma attack for a child with pediatric asthma. HG Pediatrics offers same-day sick visits, so your child gets the care they need quickly.

At HG pediatrics, we understand that Asthma requires urgent medical care. Therefore, we offer same-day sick visits for asthma patients.
