What is asthma?
Asthma is a common condition triggered by specific allergens in the environment. In simple terms, it is a respiratory condition that limits your child’s ability to breathe correctly. The symptoms tend to manifest suddenly in what is known as an asthma attack. These episodes are known to be scary and sometimes even life-threatening.
During asthma attacks, triggers cause inflammation and swelling of the air pathways, which causes permanent damage to lung tissues. Various risk factors are known to increase your child’s susceptibility to asthma. What are the symptoms of an asthma attack?
In most cases, asthma symptoms tend to manifest before the child turns five years old. These signs vary in terms of frequency and severity and are often unique to the victim. They include:
- Tightness or heaviness in the chest
- Difficulty breathing
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Pale skin color

Causes of Asthma Attacks
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America states that the most common cause of an asthma attack is exposure to specific allergens or triggers. The condition, allergic asthma, is caused by:

- Dry or humid air
- Pollen
- Mold or dust
- Perfumes or strong fragrances
It is worth noting that asthma triggers vary, and the first step in treatment is identifying the allergen. In some other cases, asthma attacks occur as a body response to a viral infection, cold, or the flu.
